Overview
Khammounane is a province of Laos located in the center of the country of which its capital is Thakhek. This land is bordered Bolikhamsai on the north, Vietnam in the east, Savannakhet in the south and Thailand in the west. Many streams flow through the province and then into the Mekong River. The vast forests of the Nakai- Nam Theun Biodiversity Reserve are important reservoirs of the Mekong tributaries as well as forming reservoirs for Nam Theun 2 - the largest hydropower project in Laos. Thakhek, the provincial capital, is an important trade center. Along with the province of Bolikhamsai and Savannakhet, this is one of the major cigarette production areas in Laos.
Khammounane is home to three protected areas. These are the Nakai - Nam Theun National Biodiversity Reserve with an area of 352,200 ha of Truong Son Range and the Nakai Plateau in the provinces of Khammouane and Bolikhamxay, the Hin Nam National Biodiversity Conservation Area covering an area of 86,222 hectares and Phou Hin Poun National Park covering an area of 150,000 hectares. These forests have many natural caves.
Coming to Khammounane, you have the chance to admire lots of temples such as That Sikhottabong, Wat Pha Sokkhamsene and That Thumphavang Stupa tower and majestic waterfalls such as Tad Kham and Tad Nam Khengkam.
